A hierarchical Bayesian model for embedding larval drift and habitat models in integrated life cycles for exploited fish ArchiMer
Rochette, Sebastien; Le Pape, Olivier; Vigneau, Joel; Rivot, Etienne.
This paper proposes a hierarchical Bayesian framework for modeling the life cycle of marine exploited fish with a spatial perspective. The application was developed for a nursery-dependent fish species, the common sole (Solea solea), on the Eastern Channel population (Western Europe). The approach combined processes of different natures and various sources of observations within an integrated framework for life-cycle modeling: (1) outputs of an individual-based model for larval drift and survival that provided yearly estimates of the dispersion and mortality of eggs and larvae, from spawning grounds to settlement in several coastal nurseries; (2) a habitat suitability model, based on juvenile trawl surveys coupled with a geographic information system, to...

Campagne Techorhago ArchiMer
Vacherot, Jean-philippe.

Classic and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in common sole (Solea solea L.) from main nursery zones along the French coasts ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Tixier, Celine; Boulesteix, Lara; Morin, Jocelyne.
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were investigated in juvenile common sole from nursery zones situated along the French coast in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Extensive identification was performed with regard to PBDEs, novel BFRs 1.2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), and other non-PBDE BFRs, namely, hexabromobenzene (HBB) and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153). Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations (E 14 congeners) ranged from 0.01 ng/g to 0.16 ng/g wet weight (ww) in muscle, and 0.07 ng/g to 2.8 ng/g ww in liver. Concentrations were in the lower range of those reported in the literature in other European locations. Lower PBDE concentrations, condition indices and lipid contents were observed in...

Dupouy, Herve; Vacherot, Jean-philippe; Meillat, Marc.
The French brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) fishery employs on a seasonal basis around 140 ships about 10 metres in length and with engines of about 100 kilowatts of power. It takes place mainly along the coastal bottoms of silted-up sand at a depth of 2 to 10 metres and occupies principally the coasts of the eastern English Channel and those of the Gulf of Gascony. The brown shrimp catch is performed by bottom trawl, with exempted meshing of 20 mm (stretched mesh), which causes numerous rejects of immature fish that live on the same bottoms. The main part of these juveniles is made up of flat fish (sole, in particular) and of gadidae (whiting and pout). To reduce these undesirable catches that are also detrimental to other fisheries, some ingenious...

Comparison of Solea solea macroparasites between two nursery-continental shelf systems in the Bay of Biscay and the Portuguese coast ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Marques, J.f; Sasal, P; Begout, Marie-laure; Cabral, H.
Digenean metacercariae of 0 year group common sole Solea solea (n = 70) were more abundant in the embayed nursery of the Pertuis Charentais than in the Tagus estuary nursery. Macroparasite assemblages of adult sole (n = 119) displayed only one species in common between the Bay of Biscay and the Portuguese coast continental shelves. These data highlighted the potential use of macroparasites as biological tags in various aspects of common sole ecology. (C) 2007 The Authors.

Morizur, Yvon; Carn, Nolwenn.

Lasserre, G.; Lasserre, P..
Population of 4000 soles received from an induced spawing (COB-BREST), with a mean weight o£ 54 mg were introduced into a man modified lagoon (1000 m2 ) at Certes (4 soles/m2 ). The experiment was continued until December 1977 and permitted an analysis of the demographic evolution of the population : structure number, biomass, growth, production. Simultaneously an estimate of the trophic support necessary for the population derived by correlating oxydative demands with rate of oxygen consumption, was determined experimentally with specimens obtained during the samplings for growth and production (19 VII, 14 IX, 24 XI, 20 XII 1977). 1°) The demographic evolution of the population shows a rapid growth and a strong spread in size. For the short duration of...

Alayse, J.p.; Lahaye, J..
The experimental unit used previously in our laboratory for the study of the effect of the photoperiod on the growth of flatfish was based on the use of tanks with separate recirculation systems. We modified it, connecting the different tanks to a single, more powerful recirculation system. This new unit comprised four different parts s - a biological filtar and an ultraviolet sterilizer. - a gravity operated water distribution system. - a series of 12 rearing tanks. - a piping system connecting the tank outlets to the biological filter. The total volume of the unit was 8 900 l. 200 l were changed every week. The main advantages of this new unit was that the quality of the water supplied to all tanks could be exactly the same, and that various parameters...

Gasche, Loic.
The Eastern Channel is a strategic area that supports many human activities, in particular fishing, freight, aggregates extraction and tourism. Many zones have also been identified that are suitable to host windfarms. A good understanding of interactions between these activities is necessary in order to estimate, forestall and manage risks of major spatial conflicts. Besides, their potential interactions with marine populations have not yet been well established. Several Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been created in the Channel in the past few years, to protect key habitats or populations, or are still being discussed. It is necessary to predict to what extent these MPAs can be an asset for a sustainable exploitation of marine resources, and what...

Long-term series in ichthyoplankton: Sole and sprat at French coast of the North Sea from 1975 to 1994 ArchiMer
Woehrling, Daniel; Le Fevre-lehoerff, Geneviève.
The sampling of eggs and larvae of sole and sprat at Gravelines (French part of the North Sea coast) since 1975 has produced a long-term series showing major interannual changes, Comparison of the results obtained on two species, one benthic and the other one pelagic, suggests some events affecting the environment that are also revealed by the holoplanktonic (appendicularia, chaetognatha) and meroplanktonic (cirripeda larvae) compartment. This Study attempts also to distinguish general variations from more closely species-related fluctuations.

Pêcheries bigoudenes. Bilan des connaissances Activités de pêche, Ressources, Gestion ArchiMer
Biseau, Alain; Maguer, Cedric; Sanz Aparicio, Céline.
Located at the far south-west of Brittany, the pays bigouden is the first of the French maritime regions in terms of landed value and the second one in weights. The bigouden fishing practices are characterised by a large diversity of target species and métiers. Studying the fishing practises leads to a description of the various métiers and fishing strategies together with their trends over the last ten years. Identification of métiers is based on multifactors analysis. Using a classification method based on thresholds of species landings then allows a more objective analysis and leads to a more quantitative characterisation of the trawl métiers, which represent more than 80% of the total fishing activity of this region. Two métiers are based on Nephrops...

Relationship between PAH biotransformation as measured by biliary metabolites and EROD activity, and genotoxicity in juveniles of sole (Solea solea) ArchiMer
Wessel, Nathalie; Santos, Raphael; Menard, Dominique; Le Menach, K.; Buchet, Vincent; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Loizeau, Veronique; Burgeot, Thierry; Budzinski, H.; Akcha, Farida.
Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in the marine environment Their toxicity is mainly linked to the ability of marine species to biotransform them into reactive metabolites PAHs are thus often detected at trace levels in animal tissues For biomonitoring purposes this findings have two main consequences (i) the determination of the PAH tissue concentration is not suitable for the evaluation of individual exposure to PAHs (ii) It can explain sometimes the lack of correlations obtained with relevant markers of toxicity such as genotoxicity biomarkers The aim of the present study was to better investigate the link between PAH exposure and genotoxicity in marine flatfish During a laboratory experiment juvenile soles were exposed...

Temporal changes in lipid condition and parasitic infection by digenean metacercariae of young-of-year common sole Solea solea (L.) in an Atlantic nursery ground (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Galois, Robert; Begout, Marie-laure; Sasal, Pierre; Lagardere, Francoise.
Little attention has been paid to flatfish parasitism as a potential factor of variation in year-class strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parasitic infection and nutritional condition of young-of-year (YOY) common sole. Sole were collected monthly from May (early settlement) to November 2004 in a mussel pole culture area, using a push-net or a trawl, and dissected for parasite identification and counts. Total lipids were extracted from the whole body and lipid classes quantified. Triacylglycerols to sterols (free form) ratio (TAG/ST) was used as an index of nutritional status. Digenean metacercariae infection, characterized by two dominant genera, displayed clear seasonal dynamics and the highest records yet reported...

The toxicity of benzo[a]pyrene on sole (Solea solea) hepatocytes: assessment of genotoxic and enzymatic effects ArchiMer
Wessel, Nathalie; Menard, Dominique; Pichavant-rafini, K.; Ollivier, H.; Le Goff, Jean-michel; Burgeot, Thierry; Akcha, Farida.
The benzo[a]pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon known to be genotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic in higher vertebrates. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the enzymatic and genotoxic effects of BaP in a benthic fish species, Solea solea. Sole hepatocytes were exposed to BaP in order to measure the modulation of ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase (EROD) activity and the DNA strand breaks induced by BaP metabolism. Exposures were performed in both culture flasks and microplate wells in order to check for the possible miniaturization of the exposure system. Moreover, sole liver microsomes were exposed to BaP in the presence of standard DNA in order to assess the potential formation of DNA adducts in sole. The results demonstrated the ability of...
